Number of regions increased from ten (10) to sixteen (16)
Through a constitutional amendment, acts of parliament, and a referendum in 2018, the then president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, increased the number of administrative regions in Ghana from ten (10) to sixteen (16). The six new regions that were added were all created from existing regions by dividing them up into two or three parts.

The then Brong-Ahafo Region was divided into three regions with the new regions designated as Bono Region, Bono East Region, and Ahafo Region.

The then Northern Region was divided into three regions with the new regions designated as Northern Region, North East Region, and Savannah Region.

The then Volta Region was divided into two with the new regions designated Volta Region and Oti Region.

The then Western Region was divided into two with the new regions designated Western Region and Western North Region.
